Stanley 104 Liberty Bell smooth plane
offered 1876 - 1918
9 inches long with a 2 1/8" cutter.
This plane with has the Liberty Bell and the
year 76 on the lever cap. It was introduced in 1876 to commemorate the
signing of the American Declaration of Independence.
Steel body tends to rust quicker than cast iron. Stay
clear of badly rusted examples.
Type 1 and 2 have the 10/5/75 Patent mark on the side
(pictured) and an ornate cap screw. Later types come with a nickel
plated, modern type screw.
Cutter and back iron are not interchangeable with
other Stanley planes (except the # 105). The cap design was also used in
the Liberty Bell transitional planes i.e. 135 but they are not
interchangeable. The 135 has a longer lever cap. If you need spare parts
you can only source them from another 104 or 105.
