Stanley 146& 147 & 148 Match planes (tongue and
groove planes)
146
offered 1905 - 1943![](../imagesStanley%20by%20Brunner/thumbprintSP.jpg)
9" long with cutters for a 1/8" tongue and matching
groove. Used on boards between 3/8" and 1/2" thick.
Good nickel plating adds to value. Cutters are often
replaced. The groove cutter is usually not marked, the tongue cutter
often is. Early models have knurled screws and Traut's 1/20/1903 patent
cast in handle.
The 146 is quite rare, the 147 scarce and the 148
fairly common.
147
offered 1905 - 1943![](../imagesStanley%20by%20Brunner/thumbprintSP.jpg)
9" long with cutters for a 3/16 tongue and matching
groove. Used on boards between 1/2" and 3/4" thick.
Marked 5/8" on handle, indicating that the plane cuts
the tongue centred on 5/8".
148
offered 1905 - 1958
9" long with cutters for a 1/4" tongue and matching
groove. Used on boards between 3/4" and 1"thick.
Marked 7/8" on handle, indicating a cut centred on 7/8".
For users wooden T&G planes are a much cheaper option
- unless you want the last one of the three options pictured.
