Stanley planes by numbers 118
Stanley 118 block plane offered 1935 - 1983 6" long with a 1 5/8" cutter. Early models are black japanned and have Stanley No 118 embossed on the toe plate. Later models have no separate toe plate and a gray, dark blue or red/brown (cordovan) finish. Some of the later models also have No 118 punched in the side. I found that quite a lot of collectors seem to prefer block planes with the model numbers on the side. The pressed steel construction supposedly makes this plane unbreakable. It was originally intended for use in schools. The low angle cutter makes this plane a decent user for most jobs. |
