Stanley 74 floor plane
offered 1886-1923
10 1/2" long with a 2 5/8" cutter
handle is 45" long with two beech grips
The original long handle was of no use when working
down on your knees. This is a very heavy plane, over 10kgs, I simply
can't see many users controlling it solely with the long handle. It's ok
on the straight but it's almost impossible to manoeuvre it into corners
and keep the downward pressure.
PS: the handle in the picture is original but the former owner added a
metal telescope- joint for easier storage/transport
A lot of these planes show up without the swivel socket for the handle.
Without it they are no good for the intended purpose of planing floor
boards from a standing position
