Stanley 77 dowel & rod turning machine
offered 1911 - 1969
15" long with up to nine cutter heads, sizes 1/4, 5/16,
3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4
black japanned, some models have a blue finish. The machine came with
one standard 3/8" cutter only.
Cutter
heads: they are expensive - try to buy a machine with several heads
included.
Make sure the machine comes with the selector wheel
on the front, I've seen quite a few of these offered without the wheel.
Used for making dowels from any square bit of wood. I
once bought one of these machines from an old cabinet maker. He told me
that he hated it with a passion. As a boy he had to turn scrap wood from
his dad's workshop into miles and miles of dowels, every Saturday
afternoon when his mates played footy. He finally got rid of the crank
handle, installed a grease nipple on top, screwed the machine to the
bench and cranked it up with an electric motor. That got the chips
flying! PS: Neil's boyhood torture instrument will be put to rest
in auction 13, lot 55. The crank handle is back in place but the grease
nipple stays!
