Head is black japanned. Later models are shorter and last models have a red finish on the handle and knob. They also have a spring loaded clamping mechanism and are able to hold a u-bent cutter as well as the traditional straight blade

The thumb screw on the side is often replaced. The screw from a 59 dowelling jig makes a good replacement
