Mid 19th century Horton, 191 Lewis Street, New York ship
axe with a narrow neck. The high poll is a steel block, fire welded onto
the wrought iron body - hence the clearly visible joint/separation line.
According to Steve's notes this separation line is common in early steel
polled axes, caused by flux impurities left between the two metals.

Super long Beschlagaxt /broad
or hewing axe. This particular shape with the skate toe and the
decorative scroll under the socket was in use from the 18th to the 20th
century, mainly in South Germany and the Alpine region. They were never
called goosewings. I would class this piece as a late cast model. It
seems to have been partially cleaned at some stage. Rust and pitting
spots on the back suggest this was a wall hanger for quite some time.
