755 Rodier Axe Co Australian racing axe with an attractive smooth hardwood handle. (My guess is spotted gum - looks a lot like Tiger Maple). One of a limited run of 15. This is a good looking tool but I do have to mention some flaws: the most obvious one is a small crack on the lower end of the eye towards the wedge, going all the way through. There are other smaller cracks and a spider web of hairline stress cracks all over the head - a sure sign of some underlying problem with the steel or the way it was treated.  (see last XL picture) . Not a user axe in its current state but it is rare and collectable all the same.   8 x 7 3/ 4 x 30 1/2", 3.1kg

747 Douglas Axe Mfg Co - established by Warren Hunt in 1835-  Kent pattern axe with one of Steve's hand made chunky rosewood handles. (I think it's Australian Red Cedar but hard to be sure without cutting it) 9 x 7  x 30", 2.5kg

742 Scarce all Tasmanian 5lb racing axe BOW (Betterment of Woodchoppers) built by a member of the Champion chopper Youd family of Deloraine made from a JPC cast (Johns Perry Casting, later to become Boral Johns Perry Hayward and still operating today as Tasmania's major steel fabrication group Crisp Bros. & Haywards in Launceston). Axe production reportedly stopped in the late 80s after Boral bought out JPC. There simply isn't a more authentic Tasmanian axe than this one! 7 3/4 x 7 x 33", 3.6kg

741 NIVEK Aussie racing axe with a new hickory handle - I believe this is the second grind and the third handle on this axe since Steve acquired it in 2016. 736 Collins 12" broad axe, apparently had a small repair to a lug but you wouldn't know if Steve hadn't marked it in the index card. Fitted with an early Krugers hardwood handle. 9 x 12 1/4 x 34", 3.4kg

735 Underhill, Boston Railway tie hackers axe with a very nicely bevelled vintage hickory handle. 10 x 8 x 33", 2.7kg

734 Arvika 4 1/2 lb felling axe. No maker's stamp but Steve never doubted its provenance. Donated by a local timber cutter in Steve's early days of collecting, entered as his 183rd axe. 6 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 30", 2.5kg   PS: Eagle-eyed Arvika collector Rob Baxter kindly pointed out that the lower part of the Arvika diamond stamp is actually visible and would date this axe between 1930s-1950s. Much appreciated.

730 Vintage German, Swiss or Austrian 14"  broad/hewing axe with with traditional decorations and hickory handle. There is a world of difference between this solid, well made tool with the pronounced chamfers as opposed to the thin bladed axes from the Balkans that proliferated the collectors market. 8 x 14 x 23", 2.6kg

729 Well proportioned sabotier's axe with vintage bulbous (cracked) fruitwood  handle. 7 x 8 x 15", 1.9  kg

728 Rough cast Keech washboard 12" broad axe head. I can't count how many times a looked at this sleeping beauty sitting on a cupboard in Steve's shed waiting to be awakened by her prince! 723 Plumb 4 lb Dreadnaught rafting axe with Permabond handle and sticker. The 5lb with the same pattern was advertised as constructors axe in the 1930s- obviously this is a later model.  8 x 4 3/4 x 34 1/2", 2.5kg

719 Challies of Dover New Hampshire shipwrights axe fitted with Tasmanian blackwood handle. 11 x 7 x 31", 3.5kg

718 Skinner & Johnson long feller - an absolute monster of an axe. Head is 16 1/2" long with a small 3" cutting edge. 31"/3.3kg overall. Fitted with a good vintage hickory handle. Salaman explains... the long blade gave an advantage when undercutting the 'sink' (to direct the fall) for it penetrated further; and it tended to produce a cupped out stump which would hold rainwater and consequently rot quicker. I remember that Steve paid a King's ransom for this axe at the Toowoomba swap. As he later mused on Facebook   Would like to know just how this managed to get into the country & be available -- I bring axes of this nature in but then I'm nuts.
