191 Embossed 4lb Rockaway pattern mfd approx. 1889 by the American Axe & Tool Co, Glassport, PA to commemorate the Red Warrior Line patented by William Mann Jan 25th, 1868. Twin curved hickory handle  seems to have been stripped and looks thirsty. Head is pinned.  7 1/2 x 4 3/4 x 20", 2.2 kg 455

190 Most unusual Austrian special purpose axe from the renowned Austrian edge tool and hammer maker K. Zeilinger, Himmelberg (now a museum, see last pic) After I sold this axe to Steve 16 years ago he wrote:... the protrusion forward of the blade is very curious and has us buggered.. Still has me buggered but thanks to the advances in search engines I could finally locate the maker. 10 1/2" cutting edge, 31" long, 5 lb 13 oz or 2.65kg

186 Polished Kelly 4 1/2 lb marked KELLY AXE & TOOL CO. REG.AUST.TR.MK. Made in USA.  I find it hard to place this axe. My guess is that it could be an early Dandenong Tassie with phantom bevel? Apart from the hefty price tag Steve left little additional information. Fitted with a well made spotted gum handle. 5 3/4" cutting edge, 30" long, total weight 2.6kg or 5 lb 12 oz.

185 Kelly Hand Made long felling axe. This is what Steve had to say about it: In all our years of collecting axes, we were totally unaware that Kelly made this pattern of axe and with the Hand Made stamp so this axe is certainly a rarity. 7 x 3 1/4 x 26", total weight 4 lb 4 oz, 1.9kg.

179 Plumb USA 3 1/2 lb yard axe with a very clean hardwood handle. Steve called it a 'bush handle', apparently it was lacquered when he added it as number 72 to his growing collection. 6 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 27", 1.9  kg

173 Impressive French Coupe-marc - often sold as Vineyard Axe or Vine Axe but really should be called a Mash Axe or  Press Axe because it is used to scrape the grape mash from the sides of the wine press - either to move it into the centre during pressing to extract every last bit of juice or to clean out the press after. Perrin Fils could be the vineyard or the maker. 27" long with a 10" cutting edge, 8 lb / 2/6 kg

250

172 Large bowl adze, most probably French, maker's  mark not clear. Looks like it has been cleaned with vinegar or the likes. 8" cutting edge,  7 1/2" deep, 10" handle, 5lb / 2.2kg 150

171 An incredibly rare piece of axe history:  6 lb ' The Red Warrior Axe'  by the American Axe & Tool Co, Glassport PA 1889-1921, unused with original paint and paper label. I believe Kelly bought the company in 1921 and continued the Red Warrior label as part of the True Temper line. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4", 2.7 kg

Clark's Tree Poisoning Axe. I did a bit of research and found that this rare unused Australian axe has three fathers. 1. A patent applicant Clark who presumably was the initiator of this invention. 2. NSW firm NJ Phillips who manufactured the applicator and 3. Hytest as the supplier of the Craftsman axe. The patent probably was based on a similar American axe (patent available online). I don’t know if Clark’s 1965 Australian patent application ever was approved. Somehow I doubt it because NJ Phillips subsequently patented their own version of a pistol type tree poison applicator (patent documents available online) using the same principle of applying the poison carried in a backpack tank connected with a hose to the applicator. PS: there are several more of these axes to come in future listings but none matches the condition of this rare local find. 7 x 4 1/4 x 28",  4 1/2 lbs / 2kg

420

169 Cornelius Whitehouse & Sons side axe with a curious angled grind and a great looking hand made hickory handle. According to Steve's notes, this axe belonged to an English carriage builder and the angled grind apparently is not uncommon in these types of axes. I assume there must be a reason why somebody would hang the handle this low and compensate for it by giving away some perfectly good steel. Certainly an interesting tool and a great talking point. 7 1/2 x 6 x 20",  1.7 kg

200

168 Little used East German (GDR) butchers axe with original handle. 4 1/2 lb, 2kg. 7 1/2" cutting edge, 20" overall. 120

167 Kelly Flint Edge Best Axe Made Rockaway pattern axe, mfd ca 1907-1930. Fitted with reshaped Krugers hickory handle. Excellent condition. 7 x 5 1/4 x 30", 2.3 kg 250

166 Gilpin 5lb felling axe fitted with a spotted gum handle. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 31 1/2", 2.9 kg 400

165 Very rare embossed Kelly Standard  4 lb. This is not an Athol Gill artwork copy (see lot 127 in the gallery), this is the real deal, manufactured ca 1904-1930. Purchased locally in 2008, restored and fitted with an old honeycomb coloured hickory handle. 7 x 5 1/4 x 30", 2.2 kg 900

164 German hatchet, Stolper pattern from the border region with Denmark - hence the distinctive Scandinavian look. 1200 grams with deeply struck maker stamp.  7 x 4 1/2 x 14", 1.4 kg 120

163 Plumb Rockaway pattern 4lb with spotted gum handle. 7 1/2 x 5 x 29 1/2", 2.2kg

150

162 W.C. Kelly Perfect 3 1/2 lb patent 1889 with embossing both sides. I believe this type of embossed advertising on phantom bevelled axes was only used between 1885 and 1889. I remember selling this axe head to Steve twenty years ago with a mushroomed head and a large crack. Blacksmith Ron Devin and Steve combined their magic to bring it back to an acceptable condition. Fitted with blackwood handle. 7 x 4 1/2 x 30 1/2, 2.2 kg

158 The Great Divider log splitter/ block buster. Some minor damage to poll and bit and a chip off one of the spring loaded wedges. Massive piece of hardware - hard to imagine actually using one! Maree told me she and Steve got sick an tired of explaining its function at their display outings so they stopped taking it! 7 x 5 x 35", 3.6 kg 165

185

152 Long bladed Beschlagaxt /broad or hewing axe. Steve indexed it as Carinthian i.e. Austrian. According to my German reference books this particular shape with the decorative scroll under the socket was in use from the 18th to the 20th century, mainly in South Germany and the Alpine region. They were never called goosewings. Some minor burring, forging lines are clearly visible. 16" cutting edge, overall 24" long, 3 1/2 lb, 1.6kg.

148 Massive 8lbs French sabotiers side axe. According to Steve's records it arrived with a broken handle so he made a new one in White Cedar. My feeling is that he never quite finished shaping it. This tool is as heavy as a broad axe, impossible to use with one hand.  7 x 8 1/2 x 19 1/2", 3.6 kg 300

135 German Stossaxt / push axe. I grew up with these being widely used by roofers/framers on building sites. They are basically chisels for paring the sides of mortises, not chopping. Never seen one used with a handle because the socket actually makes for a perfect handle. 15" long with a 2" cutting edge. 1.4kg

Steve left a price tag on this one but unfortunately no other information. 7 x 5 1/2 x 30", 2.3kg.Thank you Jesse Cotten for your alert… consensus amongst the learned axe society seems to be that this is one of Athol Gill’s fake trademark etches. 400
