491 Well made recent bearded half axe, double ground with pronounced round cut-out and a thick softwood handle hafted low. Stamped SL, no other marks. 300

482 Early D Simmons 10" broad axe mid 19th c. with upside down stamp. I don't know if this stamp pre-dates axes marked Simmons & Co - which seems to be the most common mark. Very good condition with age appropriate patina. One chip on poll. 9 3/4 x 10 x 31", 4.1kg

473 English shipwrights axe masting/ blocking axe stamped K&T? Unston. I could find no information on this maker. The stamping is only partially visible.  I believe it's quite possible that K&T? is the maker and Unston (old spelling without an 'e') could relate to Unstone town or the Unstone Mills edge tool works. (all near Sheffield) 14 x 5 1/4 x 28", 2.4kg

350

320

460 Langdon racing axe in very good condition. I couldn't find any additional information on the maker but the original owner, Ken Barham apparently was a wood chopper in the Shoalhaven area  in the 1990s. Fitted with a good racing handle.  7 1/2 x 7 x 30", 2.7 kg

600

459 This is the second of Steve's most treasured rare London pattern wheelers axes. Made by William Swift. Steve must have done some shaping to the poll, probably to remove burring. Fitted with Steve's own pattern Tasmanian Blackwood handle. 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 28", 2.7kg

400

458 Impressive French Doloire broad axe / hewing axe with old handle including worm holes. Steve was lucky to get this one through customs/quarantine without fumigation. I believe the stamping reads Thibeau, Libourne which would put this axe right into the centre of the Northern Gironde wine making region and most probably in the hands of a cooper but these aptly named 'shoulder of mutton' axes were used by many other trades and even weapons going back to the Middle Ages. 6" deep with a 13" cutting edge, overall length 28", 3.4kg

300

457 Elwell Snedding axe with Bodgers handle.. don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger reading from the index card. I translate that as trimming axe with a chair maker's handle. Never seen one like it before; can't even imagine how it's used. Marked Elwell 1940 4 1/2 lb. 9 x 7 3/4 x 11", 2.6kg

200

225

449 Cornelius Whitehouse 6 lb English felling axe, fitted with an attractive vintage hickory handle. One small tear/flaw to one of the lugs. Also stamped Clarke Exeter. 10 x 5 3/4 x 33", 3.2kg

150

448 NOS Snow & Nealley Co 'Our Best Axe', ca 5 lb, unused with paper label and original handle. Unusual axe, Steve didn't leave any classification. Blade is gradually thinning to the cutting edge, bevelled both sides. Salaman lists a similar older tool as mahogany squaring axe. My guess is a modern use would be in framing or the likes. 10 x 7 1/2 x 31", 2.7 kg

350

447 Plumb 5lb Kentucky pattern fitted with a  900mm Krugers spotted gum handle. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 x 36", 3.2kg

445 Kelly True Temper Flint Edge Jersey pattern with original 'fire hardened & factory power driven' handle. Listed as 3 - 3 1/2 lb but given the overall weight of 5 1/2 lb , 4 lb seems more likely. Some scratches to poll. 7 x 5 3/4 x 33", 2.5kg

300

444 Kelly Flint Edge/ True Temper Rockaway pattern 3 1/2 lb fitted with re-used vintage hickory handle. 7 x 5 x 26", 1.9kg

250

440 Vintage European bearded axe. Not a broad axe i.e. bevelled on both sides. Marked 3 (model) on poll with maker's stamp on cheek. The stamp 200 is actually the weight in dekagrams (10grams) still used in several European countries. This is a rare, genuine early hand forged axe as opposed to the many knockoff jobs from the Balkans you'll find on eBay. 8 1/4 x 9 1/4 x 24",  2.7kg

250

439 MMH Co Wedgeway lathing hatchet with new Blue Ribbon handle. 7 x 2 3/4 x 14", 0.8kg

200

435 Marples Shamrock Brand 3lb  wheelwrights axe in excellent original condition.  Came with a good hickory handle out of a Northern Norfolk wheelwrights shop which had no electrical tools of any sort. When the contents were auctioned off all the tools were still laying where they had been put down for the very last time.  7 x 5 1/2 x 17", 1.5kg

350

434 True Blue Racer C 95. Steve left no record of who built this axe or what the C stands for. Fitted with a slim line racing handle.  PS:  we sold a similar 7" axe C 96 as lot 373 in the Gallery. Both came from Queensland owners. I have seen another sold earlier this year on eBay for a lot of money but no additional information was provided.  7 1/2 x 6 1/4 x x 30", 2.7kg

250

428 Kent pattern 6 lb grooving axe - bevelled on both sides by WA Lyndon, Birmingham. According to Steve's notes these axe were produced for export to the colonies and used to cut a groove down the length of a log to seat the wedges for splitting. Hand crafted white cedar handle by Bob Wood. Steve must have rated it because he paid a small fortune for it. 7 x 7 x 33", 3.4kg

424 Well made, solid German pattern 13 1/2" broad/hewing axe with a prominent centre fold. The heavy construction and the stamping with initials are  indicative of North German axes - opposed to the thinner blades in most Central European axes that have flooded the market ever since eBay started!  Few pitting spots to heel, otherwise very good. 7 1/2 x 13 1/2 x 22", 2.4kg

250
