84 Jack O'Toole  4.5lb felling axe. Please note that the engraving has nothing to do with the Jack O'Toole family and their racing axes. Former owner might have poked fun at his own wood chopping skills? You can still see part of the original maker stamp on the cheek. 7 x 5 1/2 x 29" 2.6kg

70

83 Impressive German 2.5kg Bundaxt - a carpenter's axe for framing and general work. Bundaxes came in two different forms, Bart or Schmal - bearded or narrow. This one obviously is a Schmalaxt. Two maker/trademark stamps front and back 10 x 4 x 27 1/2", 2.8 kg 150

300

71 A B Riken 8 x 12" Swedish broad axe. Steve's note: "it may appear worn out but the opposite is the case, it had never seen a handle and still has the original japanning in the eye". Steve obviously fitted a new handle. 2.9 kg 270

70 Stiletto side hatchet 6 1/2 x 5 x 14" fitted with new hardwood handle. Very good condition, good stamp but shows  signs of 'cleaning' by an alchemist of the vinegar/molasses/electrolysis variety. I found a good buffing with compound and a hard stitched cloth buffer is a good way to mask the 'sandblast" look. Time permitted I might give it a go. 1.4kg

80

69 Douglas Axe Mfg Co - W Hunt & Co broad axe 9 1/2 x 10" fitted with Kruger's hardwood handle. The thick blade makes this a surprisingly heavy 4kg axe

67 6 lb Jackson racing axe. I know very little about modern axes and we couldn't find the index card to go with it. Steve left a label that reads: only 20 made. $ 800  8 x 7 1/4 x 30 3.6 kg  Darryll Littlejohn kindly shed some light on the subject: Made in Smithton Tasmania by Ray Jackson. Someone challenged him that he could not build an axe. He finished 7 ready to use and the rest were unfinished (not heat treated)

26 Massive 6 1/2 lbs blocking/squaring axe head made by blacksmith Ron Devin "The Axe Doctor" (and honorary father Christmas) to Steve's design. Sadly, Ron only survived Steve by 6 months. 2 Mathieson coachmakers axe head 9 1/4" with 7 1/2 edge, small hairline crack to poll or maybe just a forging line to go with the "dents" all of which one would not expect to see in a Mathieson quality tool. 2,1kg

3 Germanic broadaxe head marked 1778, 8 1/2 x 12 1/2",2.3kg. This is probably a one-off. I suspect it was stamped and decorated for religious/ceremonial purposes. Hot stamp IHS ( (symbol for the name Jesus) over Roman VIII (for 1778) and topped with a cross. I'm aware that there are fake age marked axes on the market but I believe this is not one of them. I actually sold this tool years ago to a third party and no surprise, it eventually found its way into Steve's shed. 500
