These axes were used to knock the scarf out in a similar manner to using a chisel with the chisel shaped end.

663 19th century Germanic broad axe with unusual fish trademark stamp and pronounced skate front. I remember selling this axe to Steve 20 years ago with a small repair near the poll. Steve had it beautifully cleaned up. I recall buying this axe in Switzerland and thinking that the fish represented the common surname 'Fischer'. 651 Underhill Edge Tool Co Ohio Pork axe. Rare axe with a curiously specific sales pitch... Ohio? pork only?  I've seen similar axes sold as meat axes, meat splitting axes or even fish axes ..anyway, Steve rated it as the only one he's come across. 10 1/2 x 10 x 26", 2.7kg

650 Keech 1985 Aussie Speed Axe. Obviously has been re-ground a couple of times and worn away some of the stamping but it's a clean and sharp racer. 7 1/2  x 6 3/4 x 31", 2.9kg

647 L&I J White 11" broad axe with custom altered poll. Steve reckoned those 4 'turrets' were cut as bark breakers. I was thinking more along the lines of roughing or marking but since this is a custom made job we'll probably never know. Clean axe. 8 x 11 x 35", 3.5kg

646 Early German splitting axe with traditional decorations and blacksmith's initials. Lost its patina through a repair to the poll by blacksmith Ron Devin.  7 1/2 x 4 x 20", 1.9kg

638 Excellent Gifford Wood Co ice axe in little used condition with original red finish and twin curved, fawn footed hickory handle. 12 x 2 1/2 x 27", 2.1kg

637 I was sure this great looking side axe was French until I deciphered the maker's mark:  J.F.R. Fuchs, Cannstatt (Stuttgart, Germany) Cannstatt to this day is renowned for quality products;  it's the hometown of Mercedes Benz and Porsche! There is a small cut in the vintage hickory handle,  8 x 9 x 17", 1.8kg

630 Most unusual Robert Sorby Kangaroo Works 22 1/2" double  bit morticing axe. Stamped on all four faces. Unlike other double mortise axes/twybils, both cutting edges are the same size (2 inches). I believe this tool most likely would have been used without a handle.

The Belle of the Ball.... Maree had her name on this one but she was not going to hang it over her bed so she decided to let it go to somebody who probably will cherish it as much as Steve did. NOS Plumb Champion with label and a gorgeous original Plumb Champion handle. What makes this axe so outstandingly rare is the use of a paper label instead of an etch. From Steve's post: 'Sent Tom Lamond these photos of the axe & he was totally floored -- he never knew that they made them with a paper label , never did I. Our thoughts were that they were possibly a short run at the end of the etched axes , before they introduced the National line - which replaced the Plumb Champion but never proved as popular'

7 1/4 x 5 1/2 x 32", 2.8kg

605 Austo's 2002 David Foster Australian racing axe. Austo's Racing Axes and Saws was a relatively short lived venture of  axemen Austin/Stewart and HILTROM PTY LTD Newcastle NSW. After the partnership dissolved Graham Austin kept producing limited batches of axes dedicated to Aussie wood choppers (according to Steve's notes 30 Fosters were made). HILTROM  was de-registered in 2009. 7 1/2 x 7 5/8 x 30", 3.1kg
